My name is Carol Brown from the Brown-Harris family.  I am not a Hole-in-the-rocker, like many of San Juan’s early settlers were, nor am I from the colonies in Mexico.  I hail from Cortez, Colorado, as does my mother, Carol Harris.  We have enjoyed many years living here in San Juan County, Utah, with the beautiful views of the mountains.  We can see 3 other states from out back yard and we can see what the pioneers must have looked at as they came to settle this area.  We have been so very blessed to have friends from all walks of life here and most nationalities.  Blanding is one of the most wonderful towns in the country, with friendly people all around.

Now for the good part—the Bears Ears National Monument.  We wonder why the federal government wanted this piece of land. All we can figure out is that it is to make a statement that the POTUS says he can do whatever he wants, regardless of what is right and what the people (who have common sense) tell him.  He is listening to no one who lives here.  He is listening to tribes that have nothing to do with the area, with environmentalists who don’t know what is going on.

Our area has been protected by the people who live here and very little damage has been done to native sites—until it was in the news and then we had college students from the liberal college of Fort Lewis, Durango come and deface some of the sites.  They were caught and hopefully will have the full weight of the law on their shoulders.  We take care of our own and don’t need the federal government stepping in and messing things up.
